GREGG MCMILLAN: BIO

Born August 13th 1957 in Gainesville Florida. At the tender age of 8, Gregg got his first taste of live music listening to his brother rehearse with Tom Petty's first band. "I would ride with my mom to pick my brother up and on at least a couple of occasions I got to hear them (The Sundowners) practice. I guess that's when the "bug" really bit me. Before that it was The Beatles on Ed Sullivan...but this was the real thing."
By the early '70s he was playing bass and fronting his own band with Nancy Luca and taking guitar lessons from Mike Campbell before Mudcrutch pulled out of Gainesville and headed West.
In the spring of 1976 ; Allan Lowe, Mike Chasteen, Jeff Sims, Steve Nelson and McMillan formed the "Dixie Desperados" ...Gainesville's very own Southern Country Rock group. The band set themselves apart from others at the time being one of the first to do only original music. The Desperados lineup added James Young on keyboards, banjo and mandolin and replaced Steve Nelson with Robert Simpson on drums. They toured the Southeastern United States twice, changed lineups again, drove 55 hours across country to shop a demo in Los Angeles in 1983, wound up staying in LA for a couple of months and released a long awaited EP before finally breaking up in 1984.
After the band split up, Gregg did some sessions playing bass for Tresa Jordan at Ray Valla's studio in Gainesville. These were demos they were planning on taking to Nashville in the weeks to come. With some convincing from Ray and his partner Buddy , several family and friends including a Nashvillian he'd met in Gainesville by the name of Mel Tilis Jr...he packed it all up and drove to Nashville. In a few days the Gainesville caravan was headed back south while Gregg stayed and eventually landed a job bartending. Life behind the bar at The Gold Rush on Elliston Place was very profitable and he quickly became friends with some of Nashville's best, including Steve Forbert, Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Tommy Boyce, Jim Glaeser and Dennis O'Rourke. "I raised a family in Nashville and was very fortunate to live there to get an idea of the real picture. After ten years and a failing marriage with financial burdens, I left Nashville and moved back to Florida. There I eventually started playing live again in the Daytona Beach area. After my marriage of 27 years collapsed, I was again fortunate to be able to continue my pursuit of making music." In 2006, McMillan released his first solo CD of all original music with the help of longtime friends and fellow Desperado, Jeff Sims and ex-Heartbreaker and #1 songwriter, Stan Lynch. Thankfully, writing music and close friends have kept me in it for the long run."
Currently, Gregg is working on songs for his next CD. Thanks for your support...
