GREGG MCMILLAN: MUSIC

16th Steet Baptist Church

(Gregg McMillan)
16th Street Baptist Church
What would their Mommas say?
Shameful memories – never fade away
Cried so hard the next three days
Was an opposition to the holy way
Broke my heart – not to see his face
Keep the family in the keepin’ room
The bad man will be walkin’ soon
Church bells ring at ten twenty two
Stained glass shattered over where they played
Red bricks smolder where they used to pray
Tears on a pillow where they used to lay

The act of violence has never been valid
It is no longer acceptable anywhere
A duty of deed is just what we need
So much indeed these minds we feed
Racial slurs are learning curves
Take a man for what he’s worth
If you’ve seen one you’ve seen ‘em all
In no way tells this story at all

Broken promises, blood, sweat and piss
Hard to believe we still live in this
Deep green teeth commandments still exist
Will there ever be a place where race don’t matter
You can’t lay the blame on those who stand
8000 mourned in old sweet home
Four little girls from Birmingham
